Business Stream appoints Weber Shandwick to support new market ambitions

Business Stream, one of the UK’s leading non-domestic water suppliers, has appointed Weber Shandwick in Scotland to provide PR support as the company gears up for further competition in Scotland and deregulation of the English non-domestic retail water market.

Led by Harry Hussain, head of Weber Shandwick’s PR team in Edinburgh, the consultancy secured the two year contract after a three-way pitch. Reporting into Sophia Goring, Corporate Communications Manager, the team will focus on delivering their PR strategy designed to consolidate Business Stream’s position as supplier of choice in Scotland and help it acquire new customers in England.

The business water market in England is currently open to competition for around 27,500 large users but will be fully open from April 2017. In advance of these reforms, Weber Shandwick will help to position Business Stream at the forefront of discussions to help shape that market. The company remains the largest supplier of water and wastewater services in Scotland, but is also looking to expand take-up of its supporting products and consultancy services.

A subsidiary of Scottish Water, Business Stream serves businesses and public sector organisations across Scotland and had revenue last year of £364m. Headquartered in Edinburgh, it also has offices in Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham, and employs around 300 staff. Since retail competition was introduced to Scotland in 2008, Business Stream’s customers have benefited from more than £100 million in savings, and a saving of more than 34,000 tonnes of carbon.
